A modest 3.53 mile brisk walk

Nothing spectacular but I achieved my objective of exercising daily and I reduced my commute quite considerably.
Certainly keeping mobile.
My route was a pretty standard —– Knightsbridge, Hyde Park, Marylebone High Street, Regents Park, Parkway, Camden Town tube station.
I have something special planned for Thursday (exercise wise)!
Kind regards,
The WFC

Monday and Tuesday evening London commutes

3.53 and 4.34 miles respectively but slightly different routes, both to Camden Town.
Tuesday’s was a variation. Hyde Park, Baker Street, Regents Park Mosque, Prince Albert Road, Primrose Hill and back down Parkway to the station.
Variety keeps me from going stale. Just turning down a side road that I haven’t been down before is quite stimulating. I had that experience this evening and found myself on a wide victorian street where cars park at 45 degrees to the pavement. That’s rather unusual here but gives the street a far less cluttered appearance.
(I’ll take some pictures to share here).

Sunday’s ‘to-do-list’

I’d like to be able to do a trial commute early Sunday morning to my office. I could leave my locks etc. there and ride home again. This will help immensely with both timings and allow me to familiarise myself with the route and road conditions.
The mileage is a big unknown but I suspect it’s about 13 miles each way. That would be a healthy commute (for me anyway). I dare say there are triathletes in our 365 group who will have covered treble that before breakfast! My aim is to ride on side roads for the busier sections of the route. Good news in the UK press about proposals for a blanket 20 mph speed limit in residential areas. That would suit be down to the ground and might well encourage many more to cycle.
The chain is lubed, tyres are pumped up and my kit is set out. What can go wrong!?
Kind regards,
The Well Fed Cheetah

My commute - a Specialized Tricross (with photo)

I chose a Specialized Tricross for the following reasons: (Please remember that as cheetahs go I’m rather heavy). The Specialized rides on 700 x 32mm tyres that provide a more generous cushion of air to roll on, the bike appears strong and well made, it may not be the lightest but I couldn’t justify spending considerable amounts of hard eraned cash on lightweight components just to save a few grams here and there.
I’ve fitted a rack and panniers to keep weight off my back and shoulders, changed the saddle, fitted LED lights and a cordless computer. I also opted for some spd clipless pedals (because I had the shoes!).

Excuse time

I wasn’t able to leave the office until 6.30pm this evening. This limited my options to exercise. Took a brisk walk across Hyde Park, up to Selfridges, all along Wigmore Street to Goodge Street tube. Better than not taking exercise, but only marginally. Friday night tomorrow and I’ll do my level best to get away on time and exercise.

my minimum standard

An evening commute of 3.53 miles across Hyde Park and up through Regents Park to Camden. Brisk walk is an efficient way of keeping my heart rate up at a sustained level. 22 degrees here in London and folks were flocking to the parks after work.

7.16 miles brisk walk

Out of office on time without feeling too guilty. Brisk walk across Hyde Park, up Baker Street, London Business School, Mosque, St Johns Wood High Street, Swiss Cottage, Adelaide Road, Chalk Farm, Round House and through to Kentish Town.
Nice and mild.
Walked from High Barnet to home. That means I got home for £2.00 rather than the full £4.70
Interestingly the first leg (5.56 miles) was at an average of 67% of max heart rate or 115 bpm . It’s all a step in the right direction, if you’ll excuse the pun, but not too intense. What is working well is that my heart rate is at least elevated for a sustained period of time.

Looking back over the past couple of weeks I acknowledge that I now need to up the in-tensity.
This coming week (Thursday/Friday) looks lousy on the weather front (not cold, just damp). My back still isn’t 100%, just some lingering lower back pain.
As an old rugby coach of mine was fond of saying when the weather was crappy, ’’you’re going to play in it, so you might as well train in it’’. I never had a problem with getting out there. It’s just that this will discourage me from venturing out on my bike. I really need to activate the morning sessions. This week is a short one, thanks to the Easter weekend. Just four days until the weekend. I need to make each one of them count.
My intention is to get some quality sleep and set my alarm for 4.40am (I’d imagine that even the French Foreign Legion get more of a lay in than that). The plan is to be tucked up in bed by 10.00pm at the very latest. With my kit set out and my backpack ready to go I should be out of the house by 5.00am. That’s approx. 6 3/4 hours of sleep. Let me see how I feel at the end of the week.
To the very best of my knowledge I live about 13 miles from my office in Knightsbridge, in the centre of London. That’s a whisker under half marathon distance. I’m about to have that confirmed as I’ll depend on my Polar 200SD for an accurate distance. Some reviews I read before parting with my money suggested it was at least 95% accurate out of the box. That’ll do for me. It will make sense to start using the HRM capability it has, even if I’ll be going ‘long and slow’.
I’ll make sure to pack my camelback for the run and also take on fluids throughout the day. Breakfast will be taken at work (healthy muesli). I’ve a pretty good idea about the route al-though I need to be flexible. One thought is to alternate between jogging and a really brisk walk in order to keep my heart rate up at a semi decent level (remember, I’m returning to running and at 270lbs + I need to be careful and consider my knees, hips and shins – not to mention the paving stones!). I may well elect to use lamp posts as my marker (no, not in the same way that dogs do), perhaps running between them at a rate of 1:3 or 1:4 (ratio run: brisk walk).
The good news is that there are rather nice showers at our offices. My toiletries are al-ready there along with a towel. I’ve also got suits, office shoes, cereal, bowl and spoon. Nothing like a bit of forward planning! - I can skip on gym membership costs.
The saving would be £3.70 tube fare from High Barnet and £1.00 to get me there by bus.
That’s £4.70 (US$ 6.91 approx.) just to get to work, never mind home - Public transport here in London is expensive.
I’ll still be cutting down my dependence on public transport in the evening as well, with fur-ther savings to come. It’s not just about the savings. It’s about using the time I’d otherwise be in an overcrowded tube train to exercise and cover a significant part of the route.
This is going to be an interesting and telling week!! It should set the tone for my commut-ing from here on in.
